Thrilla in Manilla

I got my hands on a copy of the first issue of Thrilla in Manilla this past weekend. The words copy and issue do not really do this project justice though. Tom Pennington and Versus Gallery put out an open call for artists and all types of creators to make an edition of 50 items that measure 8.5" x 11" or smaller to be included in issue one. The work is varied and includes handmade stickers, original art, CDs, photographs, etc. The digital issue is quite impressive and worth a look if you can't get your hands on the real thing. I really dig the cover art by Overstreet Ducasse screen printed directly on Manilla envelope in red and signed by the artist. We all know the devil is in the details and my man Tom P. rarely misses. Especially noteworthy was the red wax seal on the back envelope flap with the initials VS stamped into it. The only thing this project left me wanting was issue two.

So our time at 229 has come and gone...It was a good run. New space downtown on Hemming Plaza

It is with much pleasure that we announce the arrival of a new art, music, performance space downtown Jacksonville on Hemming Plaza. Located at 229 N. Hogan, The Bryan Building was built in 1927 and housed Underwood's Jeweler's corporate headquarters and retail for many years. The third story space is a dream come true. 6,200 sq ft, old wood floors, exposed brick walls. Just rough enough. Our first show will be open call for Artwalk Wednesday November 4th. Folio Weekly has partnered with the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens to create a month-long showcase of work by local artists. The rigorous artist selection process took several weeks, with participation by both Folio Weekly’s art department and Cummer curatorial staff. In the end, 18 artists were selected from more than 300 entries received...
...An opening night reception is held Friday, April 17 from 5-8:30 p.m., and the exhibit will be up from April 15-May 31. Tickets are $5, but include free snackables, beer, wine, music and a chance to rub elbows with the best and brightest artists in Northeast Florida.

it hit me today to post about shakti life kitchen. some friends asked if we had been there and i was raving about the food. the hanuman shake/smoothie thing is a favorite for sure. go check them out in atlantic beach. this place is a jewel in our town. all vegan, all raw, all shakti. it is good stuff. if you are not familiar with raw food (entrees are heated to a maximum of 118 degrees), keep an open mind. go get healthy and tasty. enjoy!

Public School Number Four, a modest proposal?

I have a vision for Public School Number Four, aka the Annie Lytle School. There has been talk of condos, artist's lofts and recently a 55-and-up residential facility, but nothing has come to fruition. I propose making Public School Number Four, the Annie Lytle School, a contemporary art center modeled after P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City (Queens), NY. This is a place that you have to experience for your self. We loved going to P.S.1 when we lived in Brooklyn and I truly believe that Duval can make something like this happen. It will be a world class cultural institution the likes of which the south has never seen. So are we really the "Bold New City of the South" or is that just something to front about? Let's do something amazing for our community and the world...

RIP BILLY POWELL

"Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell died Wednesday morning (January 28) at his home in Orange Park, Fla. He was 56. Powell was a roadie for Skynyrd until 1972, when the band was hired to play the Bolles School prom. After setting up the band's equipment, Billy sat down at a piano in the corner of the room and began to play his own version of 'Free Bird'. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant was impressed, and invited Powell to join Lynyrd Skynyrd officially as their new keyboard player."
-when i was a little kid BILLY played piano at the church we went to. he was such a cool, laid back guy. he used to come to church wearing baggies and flip flops with a hawaiian shirt. he was the man. he had this big, white piano on stage. he let me play the piano a few times after church. i had no idea he was a rock star, he was just BILLY with the big smile.

zombie bikes

tonight is workshop and movie night wednesday at zombie bikes.
they are hosting an open bike workshop from 5:30-7:30 pm. volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and help with bicycle mechanics. bomb it, a global graffiti documentary, will be shown at 8:30 pm. it's all free. so hook them up with a donation if you can and keep it going.

urban jacksonville weekly posted their second show. check it out. i learned that jacksonville is considering scaling back its recycling program and downtown jacksonville has no recycling, that is so LAME! is there something we can do about that? the show is definitely worth a listen.

i am not ashamed to say i had an ant problem. ha! no more. thanks to gina over at nature's way natural home and lawn pest control. they make most of the product that they use and gina even tasted some of it to show us that it would not hurt us or our little ones (that was the coolest part). the place smelled great after they left and the best part...no more ants. it's local, it's green and it works.

growers alliance

i mentioned growers alliance in the previous post about the riverside arts market meeting. ran into Matten (email me with correct spelling) again today at the beaches green market and figured a follow up was in order. i am not the biggest coffee drinker, usually go for chai, but this is some of the tastiest cafè i have had in a long time. Matten is really good people and the coffee sales help support the coffee farmers in kenya, ethiopia, costa rica, guatemala, etc.
check them out for some good karma brew.

In case you haven't heard the riverside arts market will debut april 4, 2009. The market will take place under the fuller warren bridge every saturday 10am - 4pm, april through december. There are spaces for 150 artists/vendors. Farmers are artists too! There is also a stage on the river where there will be live music all day. The 100 plus turnout for the meeting this morning was encouraging and the organization was impressive. I have to say the note taking skills over at theurbancore.com were on point as well, thanks TA! special thanks to growers alliance for the free coffee!!!
